A machine that excavates or hollows out; a power shovel; a dredging machine; a tool for digging. This machine is equipped with a large backhoe type stick that uses a knuckle-boom design which enables it to reach out and downward to dig or lift. It is most commonly used in construction and excavating where material may need to be moved from one point to another. Many times the material being removed is loaded directly on a truck for transport. These machines are also used to clear and construct trenches, where pipe may be laid, or water "run off" is being controlled. Because of their traction, and ability to travel over rough terrain, excavators are often fitted with a logging attachment and used in that application.
